5.How did you attract/address your audience?

I attracted my audience in three ways:
  • Offered an incentive to buy the magazine: Free Posters and an i-tunes voucher.
  • Made my magazine stand out from the rest by making my magazine look totally different to other competitors.
  • Offer articles and features that are exclusive to my magazine and appeal to my audience.
I adressed my audience in three ways:
  • Made the articles informative but relaxed, meaning that the reader can just pick up and read the magazine rather than spend time having to get into the article
  • Steered away from patronising my readers as many magazines feel the need to make the writing easier for certain social groups.
  • Give important information that will affect their interests and help answer any questions that they have.

4.Who would be the audience for your media product?

For my media product, i have identified the audience as 16-24 year olds, this is because this is the audience that is most associated with mainstream music and culture.
I also chose the audience of 16-24 year olds as it is a culture that i am member of, therefore it is easier for me to create material that is appropriate to my age group and i can facilitate and meet the demands of my age group.
To represent the needs of my target audience, i have made the magazine both easy to use and a relaxing read. I felt this was important as teenagers have a very diverse lifestyle, so it is important that they can have a magazine where they can just open and dive in straight away.

3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

In the media market, there are many music magazines aimed at a variety of different people, however very few of these music magazines target the most important social group, teenagers and none represent all the different musical interests that this group has. This is why i decided to call my magazine pop rock and aim it at 16-24 year olds. The clue to my magazines diversity is in its name pop rock. Modern day mainstream music covers rap, pop and rock. All of which have been included in my magazine, this means that i am filling a gap in the market that has profit potential. Therefore it makes sense to a media institutuion to publish and distribute my magazine.

Music Magazine Final Draft: Double Page Spread

For my double page spread, i decided to follow in the footsteps of NME and have a few pictures covering a fairly small article. The article that i used was in the form of an interview, i did this because an interview is straight and to the point, whereas an article is more longwinded and aimed at giving as much information as possible. Another reason for making the article an interview, is that most people (as found in my research), tend to look at the pictures rather than the actual article itself. By using an interview i can give the audience a cool looking page whilst still informing them with the interview.

Music Magazine Final Draft: Article

For my article, i have only changed the fonts and colours used rather than re-arranging the whole setup.
This was for two reasons, the main reason being that the article already had a very professional look, however the colours used in the original were too bright to suit the rest of my magazine (which has taken on a darker colour scheme). I have edited the article with the feedback given, including changing the language to give a more relaxed style for the reader to enjoy.

Music Magazine Final Draft: Contents Page

For my contents page i also tried to improve both the professional look of the page and the appeal to my target audience. With my older draft of the contents page, there were very few colours and fonts used, lowering the aesthetic appeal of the magazine in general.
With this version of my contents page, i have used a range of different colours and fonts in order to make the contents page (and in turn the content) more appealing to 16-24 year olds. By giving the contents page a relaxed organized set-up it helps them find what they want to find without trouble, whilst also offering other incentives to read the magazine.

Music Magazine Final Draft: Front Cover

For my final draft of my music magazine, i decided to give the front cover a more professional look and appeal. I did this by using a main image for the front of the magazine rather than a segmented version as seen in my previous drafts. I also incorporated more technical skills such as a masthead and bylines in order to give the magazine a cleaner finish. I think that with the changes made, the magazine looks more professional and attractive to our target audience of 16-24 year olds, who will be attracted by the different fonts, colours and range of bands inside the magazine.

Double Page Spread Analysis

This double page spread is from Kerrang magazine, this feature centres around the rock band: My Chemical Romance. The pictures are all live photos in black and white in order to give the article a loud effect as if the action is taking place. As with most double page spreads, the article takes a much smaller role on the page, with the eye being drawn to the numerous pictures that dominate the page. This is because more people tend to scan read these pages and look at the pictures rather than pay attention to the article.
Overall the page uses very few colours and fonts, giving it a plain look whilst concentrating the reader to the images.

Music Magazine First Draft: Article

For my article, i decided to go for a more formal approach with the layout being a standard form, however to make the article seem more professional i added several posed shots of the band. This combined with a pull quote and some background information/review of the band gives the article a better backdrop for people to understand and get closer to the band.
However, despite the use of only two colours and three fonts, the writing style i adopted in the piece was a very relaxed 'youth orientated' one. By using colloquialisms and slang, it makes an easier read for someone who is 16-24 as they want a piece that they can just pick up and read with ease.

Music Magazine Contents Page

For my Contents Page, i decided to go with a more traditional look with a guide and an insight into the magazine. I have also highlighted certain parts of the magazine by inflating images of the features to signify their importance as main articles, this will draw the reader into the magazine and allow them to find the main features with much more ease.
The final feature of my contents page is a message from the editor, i felt that it was important to include this as it is feature on all major magazine publications and gives the reader a sense of familiarity with the magazine.
